Many developers won’t use pay plugin’s. They will either use the free versions or create their own plugins.

Free plugins are good,  but when something goes wrong with an update you have no one to contact for help. So you will spend a lot of time asking for help in the WordPress forums and searching for an answer if there is one.

The problem with a custom plugins is that the only support you have is from the developer of the plugin. So they can charge anything they want to fix errors. Also if they don’t follow best practices it can leave your website open to hackers.
